Samoa’s Best – Scalini’s Sensations

For a first-time visitor, Samoa has a surprising number of good quality restaurants on both Upolu and Savai’i. From traditional Samoan fare (which equates to good nutritious food and plenty of it) to Italian fine dining and fantastic deli take-aways. We checked out Scalinis and the Pickled Lam.

Operated by Joe and Amanda Lam, Scalinis really started Samoa’s entrance into the fine dining market in 2009.

“Over the years, we have taken small steps in our business to get to where we are today,” Joe said.

“Scalinis began in St Heliers, Auckland, New Zealand back in 1999, but our plan was always to move home to Samoa – I was born in Samoa and Amanda is a Kiwi girl from the Manawatu (just north of Wellington).

“That plan came to fruition in 2009, and we have never looked back.”

Today Scalinis is known for its homemade pastas, antipasto and mezze plates, fabulous salads and of course, as everywhere in Samoa, fresh seafood.

Our advice is to go to Scalinis on an empty stomach – the food is delicious and the portion sizes typically Samoan (read huge). But because the food is just so good, you’ll find yourself eating everything on your plate.

We started with a Mediterranean mezze plate followed by tuna sashimi and beef Carpaccio. Each plate was delicious and the service was attentive and efficient.

For mains, we had lamb and grilled salmon, although to be honest, we probably didn’t need them!

The portion sizes are generous and the flavours rich and fresh.

Joe and Amanda are good company. Scalinis is busy with regular locals and expats as well as visitors. Everyone is made to feel like an old friend.

There is indoor and outdoor dining and it’s not just a restaurant. A few years ago Joe and Amanda renovated the restaurant to include The Pickled Lam – their takeaway gourmet deli.

When it first opened, there were queues for takeaway lunches, pastries and picnic boxes.

This is the perfect place to stop if you’re planning a drive around the island. Fill a basket with delicious cheeses and bread, cakes, palolo-infused pasta, cinnamon rolls and gourmet sandwiches.

Heavily involved in the Chef’s Association in Samoa, Joe is passionate about development and training of local hospitality workers. He is quick to share his skills and identify local talent and act as a mentor.

Joe has recently worked in other Pacific countries, helping foster talent and promote working with fresh local ingredients.

Scalinis is open Monday-Friday for lunch, Monday to Saturday for dinner.

The Pickled Lam is open Monday to Friday from 7:30am and Saturdays from 7:30am to 3pm.
