January 3, 2019Honiara, Solomon Islands – Solomon Airlines has commenced direct services into far-flung Lomlom Island, the largest of the 18 Reef islands located in Temotu Province in the eastern region of the Solomon Islands archipelago.
The inaugural service to Lomlom, a one hour and 45-minute flight from Honiara, took place on 27 December when Solomon Airlines’ Dash-8 (H4-SOL) took off from Henderson Airport carrying 19 passengers and four crew.
Solomon Airlines manager – commercial, Colin Sigimanu said while the new service will initially operate on a weekly basis the airline had plans to increase flight frequency going forward.
“This new service is highly significant for one of the remotest regions of the country given the potential it holds both for business activities and the development of tourism undertakings,” Mr Sigimanu said.
“We are very excited with this development.”
Mr Sigimanu said the airline acknowledged the investment and efforts of the national government, the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands (CAASI) along with the cooperation of local land owners, all of which he said had paved the way for the commencement of the new service.
